Tours
In its sixteen-year history MGC has established a reputation for musical excellence in the community, throughout the state and nationally. Girls are trained in a wide range of musical styles from classical to gospel. Bel Canto, the touring choir, has performed in Washington, D.C., Boston, New Orleans, Oregon, and Hawaii, as well as Canada, Italy and England. In June-July of 2007 they represented Mississippi in the World Voices of Australia Festival in Sydney, Australia, with a solo performance on the world-famous Sydney Opera House stage. The choir also performed with the Mississippi College Singers on their annual "Festival of Lights" and performed John Rutter's Mass of the Children with the Galloway Chancel Choir. The choir was one of three guest artists to perform for the Vicksburg International Chamber Festival. In January 2008 the choir performed at Carnegie Hall with the Mississippi College Singers. In October 2008 the MGC performed with the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra for the Magic of Disney Concert. In December of 2008 they performed Vaughn Williams' Hodie with the Mississippi Chorus. During the month of April 2009 the choir performed Suor Angelica with the Mississippi Opera. In 2009 our young women represented Mississippi at the American Musical Salute to Hawaii Commemorating 50 Years of Statehood
The Mississippi Girlchoir made their third appearance in Carnegie Hall in June 2010. Under the direction of Stephen Roddy, the Girlchoir joined 5 other youth choruses from the south. The mass choir premiered a work written by famous composer Joseph Martin. The premiere work, entitled Heartsongs, is a collection of music based upon the poetry of Mattie Stepanek who died at the age of 13 due to a form of muscular dystrophy. The result was a soul-stirring performance carrying a message of peace that brought together young singers from all races and socio-economic levels. While in New York, the girls enjoyed the sights and sounds of Broadway, viewed the city from the "Top of the Rock", absorbed the culture of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, sailed out to visit Lady Liberty, and experienced the solemnity of Ground Zero. The week spent in New York afforded the girls opportunities to rehearse and perform in such world-class locations as the Alvin Ailey School and Carnegie Hall. In January of 2012 the Mississippi Girlchoir will make their Lincoln Center debut under the direction of James Meaders. Joining with other groups from Mississippi, the Girlchoir will sing John Rutter’s Mass of the Children. In looking at our 16-year history, the Mississippi Girlchoir alumnae are singing throughout the United States in college choirs. They return yearly for our Holiday Concert to join in our choirs in their last song. This brings an art back full circle showing the importance and value The Mississippi Girlchoir has been to these young Mississippi ladies.
